Regulatory Context

The WEL for bitumen fume (0.5 mg/m³) applies from 1 December 2026. Road construction PCBUs must assess worker exposure during hot-mix asphalt operations. Where old road surfaces contain coal tar, the NTGC classification means there is no safe exposure level.

SafeWork NSW Context

SafeWork NSW will enforce the new 0.5 mg/m³ WEL from 1 December 2026. Road construction PCBUs in NSW must demonstrate compliance through exposure monitoring by a competent person.
